Disaster Tips Sheets for Faith Community Partners Sheltering & Mass Care
In October 2012, the National Disaster Interfaiths Network (NDIN), in partnership with the University of Southern California Center for Religion and Civic Culture (USC CRCC), launched the Be A Ready Congregation Partner campaign. Key to this resource are the NDIN “Disaster Tip Sheets for Faith Community Partners.” These tip sheets offer government, non-profits or other faith-based organizations all-hazards best practices and resource links about disaster mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery – this set specifically addresses religious literacy and competency guidelines for Sheltering and Mass Care.
A free resource, the guidelines within the Tip Sheets are provided to inform religious literacy, cultural competency and reasonable religious accommodation mandates for U.S. Mass Care providers, and to assist staff and volunteers in competently meeting the needs of minority faith communities during disaster response or recovery operations—whether at a government or private shelter, or a shelter in house of worship or other religious facility.
In 2014, NDIN and USC CRCC signed a “Collaboration Agreement” with the American Red Cross to co-brand this Tip Sheet Set. The collaboration allowed for wider distribution of these tools through our nation’s leading Mass Care provider and its many chapters, partners and volunteers.
